چکیده
Data from the C-band weather radar located in central Estonia conjunction with latest reanalysis of European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), ERA5, and Nordic Lightning Information System (NORDLIS) lightning location system data are used to investigate climatology convective storms nine summer periods (2010–2019, 2017 excluded). First, an automated 35-dBZ reflectivity threshold-based storm area detection algorithm is derive initial individual cells base level reflectivity. Those detected as a basis combined available potential energy (CAPE) values ERA5 find thresholds severe Estonia. A defined at least 51 dBZ CAPE 80 J/kg. Radar-Based Analysis of Convective Storms over Northwestern Italy
Thunderstorms may cause large damages to infrastructures and population, therefore the possible identification of the areas with the highest occurrence of these events is especially relevant. Nevertheless, few extensive studies of these phenomena with high spatial and temporal resolution have been carried out in the Alps and none of them includes North-western Italy. To analyze thunderstorm eve...
متن کاملModeling Aerosol Impacts on Convective Storms in Different Environments
Aerosols are known to have both direct and indirect effects on clouds through their role as cloud condensation nuclei. This study examines the effects of differing aerosol concentrations on convective storms developing under different environments. The Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS), a cloudresolving model with sophisticated microphysical and aerosol parameterization schemes, was u...
متن کاملEstimating Wind Speeds of Convective Storms from Tree Damage
In much of the central and eastern United States, tree damage is typically the most common damage indicator available to National Weather Service meteorologists estimating wind speeds from convective storms. Unfortunately, most meteorologists have little or no formal training in the susceptibility of trees to high winds, and the Enhanced Fujita scale does not address many of the various factors...
متن کاملNCAR Use of Radar Observations to Improve Numerical Prediction of Convective Storms
Accurate prediction of the location and timing of convective storms has been a long-standing challenge due, to a large extent, to uncertainties in model initialization and parameterization. Since its advent, Doppler radar has been used successfully for severe weather detection and warning. However, until recent years, radar data have not been incorporated into atmospheric models for numerical p...
متن کاملRelationship between surface conditions and subsequent rainfall in convective storms
This paper describes the relationship between surface conditions (temperature and humidity) and subsequent rainfall. The focus is on convective storms that are forced and maintained locally due to conditional instability in the vertical distribution of atmospheric temperature. These storms are described using two probabilistic measures: (1) the probability of occurrence of storms given surface ...
